What does a web development agency do?

A web development agency plans, designs, builds, launches and maintains websites, online stores and web apps for other businesses. Unlike a single freelancer, an agency gives you a team under one agreement, usually covering strategy, design, development, SEO and project management, so the work doesn’t stop when one person is away. Most agencies also look after hosting, security and updates after launch. No agency can promise you the top spot on Google, and Google says so itself, so treat a ranking guarantee as a warning sign.

WordPress vs Webflow vs Shopify vs custom code: which is best for my business?

Choose Shopify if you sell products online, Webflow for a design-led marketing site your team can edit easily, WordPress if your team already knows it or needs a specific plugin, and custom code when speed, low platform fees or custom features matter most. No platform is best for everyone; the choice depends on what you sell, who will edit the site and how it needs to grow. Running costs differ too: WordPress needs ongoing plugin and security updates, while Webflow and Shopify include hosting and updates in a monthly plan. Tell us how your team works and we’ll recommend one and explain why.

How much does website development cost in Australia?

At Webhaus, website projects start from $10,000, and a business website with 10 to 30 pages, a CMS, forms and analytics is usually $25,000 to $60,000 (ex GST). The price depends on the number of pages, features and integrations. As a guide: ecommerce stores are $30,000 to $75,000, landing pages are $3,500 to $7,500 for the first page and $1,500 to $3,000 for each variant, and web apps start from $9,500. Rebuilds that move platforms add $1,800 to $4,500 for SEO migration, and every project is a fixed price for an agreed scope.

How long does it take to build a website, and can you meet our deadline?

Most of our website projects take around 6 to 8 weeks from first call to launch, a landing page goes live in 1 to 2 weeks, and online stores and web apps take longer. The build is rarely what holds a project up; content and approvals are. If you have a hard deadline, tell us on the first call. We’ll scope the project to fit, agree what must work on launch day, and commit to a date we can actually hit.

Website design FAQs

What does a web design agency do?

A web design agency plans, designs, builds and launches websites for businesses, and usually looks after them afterwards. A typical agency team includes a project manager, copywriters, designers, developers and someone who tests the site before it goes live. With one team covering all of it, the words, design and build are planned together rather than handed between suppliers. Any good agency should also offer ongoing support after launch.

Will a new website actually get us more leads?

Not on its own. A new website converts the traffic you already have, but it doesn’t create demand, and search results can take weeks or months to respond to changes. It gets you more leads when it fixes the real problem, such as pages that don’t match what people searched for, a weak offer, or a form that’s hard to use on a phone. When we built dedicated service landing pages for GeoSurv, their form submission rate went from 0.61% to 2.47% in three months.

How much does website design cost in Australia?

At Webhaus, website design and development projects start from $10,000, and a business website with 10 to 30 pages, a CMS, forms and analytics is usually $25,000 to $60,000, all excluding GST. That covers strategy, copywriting, design and development, quoted as a fixed price for an agreed scope. The biggest things that move the price are the number of page templates, integrations, how much copy and content needs writing or moving, the platform and any custom features. Hosting and maintenance after launch are separate, from $550 a month.

Do you write the copy, or do we?

We write it. Copywriting is included in our website projects: we send you a questionnaire to capture what you know, write the draft, then refine it with your feedback, so you never start from a blank page. We map the pages and write the message before design starts, so the design is built around real words rather than placeholder text. You review and approve every page before it goes live.

AI search and SEO FAQs

Every kind of SEO, from technical fixes and local search to link building and getting cited by AI tools.

What are SEO services?

SEO services are the work an agency or consultant does to help your website rank in Google and appear in AI search tools like ChatGPT. They usually cover technical SEO, on-page optimisation, SEO copywriting, content, link building, local SEO and AI search. Most businesses need two or three of these, starting with whatever is holding the site back most. Our guide What are SEO services? explains each type and what it costs.

How much do SEO services cost in Australia?

In Australia, ongoing SEO typically costs $500 to $1,000 a month for an entry-level package, $1,500 to $3,000 a month for growth, and from $5,000 a month for competitive or national campaigns. One-off work is priced separately: an SEO audit is usually $1,500 to $5,000, and a website migration $3,000 to $10,000. The price depends on how competitive your market is, the size of your site and how much content and link building is needed. Appearing in Google’s organic results is free; you pay for the work, not the placement.

How long does SEO take to work?

Most websites start seeing measurable results from SEO within three to six months, with bigger gains in traffic and enquiries over six to twelve months. Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and that you should wait a few weeks before judging whether a change worked. Technical fixes on an established site can show results quickly. New sites in competitive markets take longest.

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT and AI search?

Make sure AI tools can reach and understand your site, then give them reasons to mention you. Allow AI search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot, keep your important content in the page HTML, and write clear answers to the questions your customers ask. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and your business described consistently across directories, reviews and other sites. Google says chasing inauthentic mentions isn’t as helpful as it seems; original, useful content matters most.

Website maintenance FAQs

What looking after a website involves, what it costs and what support to expect after launch.

Explore more answers

What does website maintenance include?

Website maintenance includes software, theme and plugin updates, security patching and monitoring, regular backups you can restore from, hosting, uptime and performance monitoring, and checks that forms and integrations still work. A good plan also includes reporting, so you can see what was done, and time for small content changes. The Australian Cyber Security Centre also recommends multi-factor authentication for every admin account and limiting admin access to the people who need it. What’s included varies a lot between providers, so ask for the list.

How much does website maintenance cost in Australia?

Our care plans start from $550 a month (Foundations: hosting, updates, security, backups, monitoring and a monthly support and change allowance), $950 a month (Growth: adds performance monitoring, form and integration checks, a named contact and defined response times) and $1,750 a month (Advanced: adds a larger change allowance, ongoing SEO and AI search, and conversion improvements). Hosting is included for custom-built sites; Webflow and Shopify subscriptions are paid to the platform. The right plan depends on how often your website needs changing and how much it matters to your business. See our care plans.

What support do you offer after launch?

After launch you can take the website in-house or keep us on. Our care plans cover hosting, maintenance, security, monitoring and a monthly allowance for changes, and we can keep improving SEO, AI search and conversion. We also do one-off changes outside a plan: we estimate the time and you approve it before we start, and we offer retainers if you’d rather book regular hours. You also get video training and a walkthrough, so your team can manage content themselves.

How do you make sure changes don't break our live site?

Nothing goes live without your approval. Changes are built and tested on a staging copy of the site, or a duplicate theme on Shopify, and you sign them off before we publish. On platforms with an activity log, like Webflow, you can see who changed what. If something does go wrong, we tell you straight away, fix it and explain what happened.

Web app and agency partner FAQs

Custom web apps and client portals, plus how agencies partner with us on white label web design and development.

Explore more answers

What is a web app, and how is it different from a website?

A web app is software that runs in a browser and lets people do things, such as log in, enter data, book, quote or manage work, while a website mainly gives people information. The clearest dividing line is logins and stored data: if users create accounts, save records or see content tailored to them, you’re building a web app. Many web apps can also be installed on a phone as a progressive web app (PWA), from a single codebase. Gmail and online banking are web apps; most business websites are not.

How much does a custom web app cost in Australia?

Our web app and portal projects start from $9,500 (ex GST) for a single-purpose tool such as a calculator or quoting tool, and run to $60,000 or more for a full portal with logins, user data and integrations. The price depends on the number of user roles, screens, integrations and how much data the app handles. Every project is scoped and quoted at a fixed price before the build starts. Budget for ongoing hosting and maintenance after launch too.

What is white label web development?

White label web development is when a specialist partner builds websites or web apps for an agency, and the agency delivers the work to its client under its own brand. The agency keeps the client relationship, sets the price and handles billing, while the partner provides the design, development or ongoing support behind the scenes. It lets marketing, branding and creative agencies offer web work without hiring an in-house development team. The agreement should spell out exactly how visible the partner is to the client.

Do you do white label or development-only work?

Yes, both. We can work fully white label under your brand, as a named web partner, or client-facing when you need us, and the partnership doesn’t have to look the same for every job. If you only need development, we can build from your approved designs; if you need the whole project, we can handle strategy, copy, design, build and SEO. See our agency partner service.
